The One Punch Man anime has been mired in controversy ever since J.C. Staff took over from Madhouse in 2016 for Season 2 onwards, with fans complaining about a perceived dip in animation and writing quality.
New director Shinpei Nagai begged fans to “please stop the harassment,” but the criticism continued when Season 3 premiered, with One Piece animator Vincent Chansard even jumping in to defend J.C. Staff and describe the issue as “complex.”
That hasn’t stopped the memes from rolling in, especially after Garou’s now-infamous hill slide in Season 3 Episode 2. Love it or laugh at it, the next episode will be dropping soon – here’s when to tune in.

What happened in Season 3 Episode 4?
One Punch Man Season 3 Episode 4, ‘Counterattack Signal’, is another slow-burn entry, focusing on the Hero Association preparing to strike the Monster Association, with only brief flashes of real action towards the end.
The episode opens with Garou waking up after being attacked by Royal Ripper and Bug God – not only is he alive but he’s also regenerated. Meanwhile, the heroes strategize for their assault on the monsters’ underground base, debating tactics and who to trust.
A lighter highlight arrives with the hotpot scene, where Saitama, King, Genos, Fubuki, Silver Fang, and Dr. Kuseno squabble over food. This later leads to the Hero Association finding King, who joins the S-Class heroes for the upcoming strike.
Alongside King, the team includes Flashy Flash, Child Emperor, Tatsumaki, Superalloy Darkshine, Zombieman, Pig God, Puri-Puri Prisoner, and Atomic Samurai. The ending launches into action when Garou battles it out again with Royal Ripper, teasing plenty more to come in Episode 5.
Even with these moments of excitement, many One Punch Man fans aren’t happy with the latest chapter. Taking to Reddit, one wrote, “Episode 4 suffered from some pretty severe directing issues, on top of the awful animation.
“They didn’t even animate Garou standing up, instead, they rely on camera cuts and zooming out to reduce detail just to create the bare minimum of motion. The episode is filled with dull, dragged-out dialogue.
“And yeah, I’ve seen the ‘but dude, that’s how it is in the manga’ argument. Sure, but that’s exactly why the anime should improve on the manga. For example, that scene in Saitama’s house where they literally leave a static PNG on screen for like 20 seconds? That’s just bad.”
Another agreed, “We can call this a manga voiceover rather than anime at this point. Even then it is not a good one lol,” and a third added, “If only, manga panels actually have more details than this.”
However, not everyone agrees with this feedback. Over on IMDb, where Season 3 Episode 4 has been rated 5.8/10, one fan wrote, “Episode 4 was really good-arguably the best of Season 3 so far.
“The animation quality improved noticeably, featuring smoother movements and more dynamic visuals compared to the earlier ‘PNG’ moments that felt too static.
“However, there were still a few drawbacks, like some awkward camera cuts and quick jumps between scenes that seemed aimed at saving time. Despite that, it was a solid episode overall, though a bit on the slow-paced side.”
Another said, “Despite the flaws, the effort in the direction and storytelling stands out. The emotions are clear, and the dialogue feels genuine enough to keep you interested.
“You can tell there’s passion behind the project, and that makes it easy to overlook minor rough edges. Overall, it’s a great start – fast-paced, engaging, and full of promise for what’s to come.”
