The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is a dramatization of the infamous true crime case, and it’s just around the corner. Unlike Netflix, the series won’t be dropping all at once, so be sure to make note of the release schedule so you know when to tune in.

On November 1, 2007, Meredith Kercher – a British student studying in Italy – was brutally murdered in her home at the age of 21. What followed was a media frenzy, an ocean of bias, and an investigation that was doomed from the start.

By the time the bloodstained fingerprints at the scene were identified as belonging to the real killer, Rudy Guede, both Amanda Knox, an American student and Meredith’s roommate, and her Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were charged with the murder.

While there have been countless documentaries on the case, this marks the first time it’s been dramatized in a full-length TV show. Primarily, this is Amanda’s tale, one in which she reclaims her story and exposes the flaws that shaped her fate.

If you’d like to give it a watch, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox Episodes 1-2 air on Hulu on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at 12am PT / 3am ET. For those outside of the US, the show will drop on the same date on Disney+.

What’s it about?

The new TV show centers on the murder of Meredith Kercher, the wrongful conviction of Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito, the trial (and trial by media), and their fight for justice.

Across eight episodes, it explores the mistakes made by Italian detectives and delves into the life of prosecutor Giuliano Mignini, offering context to his relentless pursuit of Amanda and his unshakable belief in his theory of the case.

The series also traces the wider ripple effects – from the toll Amanda and Raffaele’s wrongful incarcerations had on their families and communities to the devastating impact of the false accusation against Knox’s boss, Patrick Lumumba.

As per the official synopsis, “The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox follows the eponymous American college student, who arrives in Italy for her study abroad only to be wrongfully imprisoned for murder weeks later.

“The series traces Amanda’s relentless fight to prove her innocence and reclaim her freedom, and examines why authorities and the world stood so firmly in judgment.”

It was produced by Monica Lewinsky, whose own experience being vilified in the court of public opinion made it easier for Knox to open up to her.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Amanda, who co-produced the show, said, “When I met Monica, I was just glimpsing what it could mean to stand up for myself – and hope strangers would actually see me as a human being.

“So talking to her was a huge relief. No one had walked that walk before me more than she did.”

Monica added, “When we met, I saw in her the pain that I saw in myself. She was desperate to get out of this box she had been put in. But you don’t often see people reclaiming a narrative in public…

“It was really important to us to go beyond the courtroom. It would have been so easy – and trite – to just say, ‘Here’s six episodes, we’re going to end with the acquittal.’ There was a lot of resistance, but we insisted on eight because the story doesn’t end at the courtroom.”

“I hope that what people take away from this is seeing what happens to people when the headlines quiet down, when you’re with your family, trying to find a way forward, figuring out who you are now,” she continued.

“It’s not just a true-crime show or a courtroom drama. It’s a look at the media and the rush to judgment you often see in cases like this. People forget there are actual human beings behind all these headlines. With some of that understanding, maybe it won’t happen – or happen as badly – to the next person.”

Who’s in the cast?

Tell Me Lies star Grace Van Patten takes on the lead role of Amanda Knox, with her real-life counterpart describing her as having a “crazy, innate talent”. Grace’s real-life sister, Anna Van Patten, appears as her on-screen sister Deanna Knox.

The rest of the cast and characters are as follows:

  • Giuseppe De Domenico as Raffaele Sollecito
  • Francesco Acquaroli as Giuliano Mignini
  • Rhianne Barreto as Meredith Kercher
  • Souleymane Seye Ndiaye as Patrick Lumumba
  • Sharon Horgan as Edda Mellas, Amanda’s mother
