Looking for your Virgin River fix while you wait for Season 7? You’re in luck, as Netflix just dropped Sullivan’s Crossing Seasons 1 and 2, sparking intrigue about the show’s setting and filming locations.
The series follows neurosurgeon Maggie Sullivan (Morgan Kohan) returning to her childhood home in rural Canada after a crisis in Boston. Cue soapy drama and romance, wrapped up in a small-town setting.
If you’re a fan of Virgin River, you’ll likely know the similarities. Both shows are based on Robyn Carr novels, both are CTV/CW co-productions, and both have executive producer Roma Roth involved.
But the biggest of all is that they’re two highly binge-worthy TV shows. Unlike Virgin River’s California setting, Sullivan’s Crossing leans into its Nova Scotian landscapes, with the stunning scenery a character in and of itself.
Sullivan’s Crossing filming locations
While the town in which it’s set, Timberlake, is fictional, the settings are very real. Since Timberlake is based in Nova Scotia, it should come as no surprise that the series is filmed in the Canadian province – primarily in and around Halifax.
The crew embraced its waterfront and downtown streets, with Cal star Chad Michael Murray praising the location.
Speaking to Parade in 2023, he said, “It’s fantastic. We’re on the East Coast in Halifax. It is a hidden gem. This place is absolutely magic.
“When you’re flying here, you kind of feel like ‘Okay, where am I going?’ It kind of looks like life before people. And then, boom, you hit Halifax. We’re out there every day and it’s just such a breath of fresh air filming.”
Below, you can find a series of more specific places where Sullivan’s Crossing shot scenes:
Beaver Bank Road, Beaver Bank
The moment Maggie returns to her quaint country home? These shots were filmed at 1901 Beaver Bank Road, the former Harold T. Barrett Fun Forest Camp – not far from where Shubie Park meets Beaver Bank.
Sullivan’s Crossing isn’t the only show to set up camp at Beaver Bank. From built its entire town here, with the hit horror series also filming in Halifax.
Shubie Park, Dartmouth
The lush woodland paths, picnic clearings, and serene canal locks of Shubie Park double as Timberlake’s trails and community spots.
The Fairbanks Centre and Great Trail pop up in various moments, and the great thing is that, much like the majority of these filming locations, you can visit them yourself.
Oakfield Provincial Park, Oakland
This popular picnic park features open green spaces and wooden backdrops, serving as extra outdoor settings for the strolls and meetups in Sullivan’s Crossing.
It’s another filming location the show shares with From, with one local even spotting filming crew there last year.
Fisherman’s Cove, Eastern Passage
Fisherman’s Cove is a wonderfully quaint, restored 200-year-old fishing village, and it serves as the perfect backdrop for Sullivan’s Crossing.
In 2023, the location’s official Facebook page shared a post from local shop The Violet Unicorn, which said, “Were you watching Sullivan’s Crossing last night on CTV and thought the scenery looked familiar? Well it was Fisherman’s Cove and that’s my little purple shop! So exciting!”
Lawrencetown Beach & Peggy’s Cove
Though not primary sets, sweeping aerial shots of Nova Scotia’s iconic coastal locations – Lawrencetown Beach and Peggy’s Cove – promote the province’s breathtaking natural scenery.
Why Nova Scotia?
The TV adaptation changes the location of Carr’s books from the Rocky Mountains to the Canadian countryside, with showrunner Roma Roth opting for Nova Scotia to differentiate from Virgin River and bring authentic Canadian flavor.
In a conversation with Variety while the series was still in development, she explained, “To ensure the show would feel distinctive from her other adaptation, I decided to set it in Nova Scotia for Nova Scotia. This meant diverging from the books slightly.
“However, having been born and raised in Canada it’s always been a personal goal of mine to create and write a Canadian content show that would reach a global audience. I believe that given Robyn’s successes we have a strong chance of accomplishing this with Sullivan’s Crossing.”
She wasn’t wrong: Seasons 1-2 were a resounding success, with Season 3 currently airing on The CW in the US. The finale is set to drop on July 16 at 8pm ET.
