If Where Winds Meet isn’t on your radar, yet, it needs to be. At Gamescom 2025 I had the chance to try it for myself, and even with only a short session, it was clear why this should be one of the most talked-about RPGs of the year.
Where Winds Meet has been in development for several years. It was first announced back at Gamescom 2022, and now it’s coming to the West, catching attention with a blend of open-world exploration and action inspired by a form of Chinese martial art fiction called Wuxia
The game is an open-world RPG set in tenth-century China during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms era. It boasts a vast world and apparently something like 150 hours worth of single-player content. Unfortunately, I had only half an hour to get a sense of it.
Dropped into a mission to start the demo, this section was a little too on-rails for my liking, as I simply awaited button prompts before complying and watching the protagonist do the rest without much input from me. But once I broke out into the open world, Where Winds Meet really came into its own.
The city I explored had the look and feel of something out of Assassin’s Creed, but with an obviously darker tone, and the general vibe had a Sekiro-like edge.
I instantly fell in love with the movement, which is the star here for sure. Double and triple jumping across rooftops was addictive, and I could have spent a long time simply roaming freely and enjoying the traversal mechanics.
Combat was easy to grasp right away, even if I did not have enough time to fully make the most of the range of abilities and combinations. A boss fight tested me but remained fair, striking a good balance between challenge and accessibility. The environments stood out throughout my session, with rural areas that reminded me of Ghost of Tsushima thanks to the level of detail in the landscape and vegetation.
30 minutes with the game was not nearly enough, but I was so captivated by its movement and open world that I just didn’t want to leave. It was easily a top pick from all my Gamescom demos so far.
Where Winds Meet is set for release in Europe and North America on November 14, 2025, for PlayStation 5 and PC, with mobile and cross-progression support planned.
From what I played, it feels like a world worth losing yourself in, blending freedom of movement with cinematic action and a setting that constantly pulls you in further.
