The question of who was actually calling Bree (Catherine Missal) before her wedding in Hulu’s Tell Me Lies has been on fans’ minds ever since the showrunner confirmed it’s not Stephen (Jackson White), and the Season 3 premiere drops some major hints.
If you need a reminder, in the 2015 timeline of Tell Me Lies Season 2, Bree was seen repeatedly getting a call from an unknown number. The night before her wedding to Evan (Branden Cook), she tells the caller, “Please just leave me alone. I want to feel like a good person.”
In the finale, she receives a recording from Stephen, who secretly recorded Evan admitting to sleeping with Lucy (Grace Van Patten) in college. However, if you thought she was speaking to Stephen or even Oliver (Tom Ellis) earlier on, you would be wrong.
Showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer told Variety last year that she can’t say who the caller is, but confirmed, “It’s not Stephen and it’s not Oliver.” However, some fans think they’ve figured out who it is after the Tell Me Lies Season 3 premiere.
Who is calling Bree in Tell Me Lies Season 3?
We can’t know for certain, but the leading theory right now is that it was either newcomer Alex (Costa D’ Angelo) or Wrigley (Spencer House).
This is according to the Tell Me Lies subreddit, where a vote was held. The poster said, “So far, Alex is in the lead with 1097, Wrigley is a close second with 1078, then unknown is a distant third with 624.
“Marianne is a super distant fourth with 129 and Lydia is in last with a mere 61. Some users have messaged us speculating MO could’ve changed the story now that Oliver is back, however we have it on decent authority that it’s still not him.”
First, let’s look at Alex, who’s introduced in the first three episodes of Season 3 as the local drug dealer. However, it later transpires that he’s actually Bree’s old foster brother.
Even though she doesn’t remember much from her time at that home, Alex says she was bossy at first, but the traumatic incidents that unfolded there had an impact on her. Bree does recall that Alex was protective of her.
In the college timeline, Lucy ends up hooking up with Alex, something Bree supports. As for evidence he’s the caller, before telling them to leave her alone, Bree said, “I have a chance to be happy, okay? Like, genuinely happy. This is my chance to have a family. To live a life that I don’t feel like a f**king visitor in.”
And who else would understand this reasoning better than the person who saw what she went through as a child? But fans also believe it could be him because they don’t think Wrigley would act that way.
One wrote, “I definitely am leaning toward Alex as the person Bree was on the phone with. I just don’t see her having that kind of animosity or irritation with Wrigley.
“Wrigley is a gentle giant and I just can see him putting Bree in a position to speak that way to him. But I can totally see her having that kind of conversation with a character like Alex.”
“It would make sense for it to be Alex and say he and Lucy had started dating and Bree hooked up with him, hence her not being mad or cancelling the wedding and telling Lucy she’s a bad person,” said another.
“So many directions this could go. Alex also told Lucy he doesn’t do feelings for temporary people – he’d made that mistake before.”
But the person who’s sparked the most conversation is Wrigley. In Season 3, it looks like he’s starting to develop feelings for Bree. And given Pippa (Sonia Mena) is having an affair with Diana (Alicia Crowder), there’s all the chance Bree and Wrigley could start hooking up.
There are plenty of commenters suggesting Wrigley, while also saying they support the idea of him and Bree getting together. “Wrigley but I Stan it,” wrote one, while another said, “Wrigley but I’m so excited.”
Others have pointed out that Wrigley seemed like he was drunk or high at the wedding, indicating that he’s having a hard time – perhaps because he still loves Bree?
“Wrigley did show up to the wedding a little out of it. I thought it had something to do with his brother but maybe it’s something to do with Bree getting married,” said one.
There’s also the fact that in the Tell Me Lies Season 2 finale at the wedding, Wrigley says to Lucy, “I guess it’s probably time for me to let go of that crush that I’ve been holding onto for a decade.”
Lucy looks towards Pippa and Diana, assuming he’s talking about Pippa. But Wrigley then looks further aside, and it could be to where Bree is getting ready. Plus, another fan pointed out, “Why would he call Pippa his crush when at one point she was his girlfriend?”
There are plenty of other theories too, ranging from Bree’s foster sister to Lydia (Natalee Linez) and Oliver’s wife Marianne (Gabriella Pession). Some even think Oppenheimer might be throwing us off the scent and it could be Stephen or Oliver after all.
Tell Me Lies Season 3 sparks Hannah mystery
As well as the Bree caller speculation, another mystery has unfolded after eagle-eyed fans noticed a missed call on Stephen’s phone in Tell Me Lies Season 3 from someone named Hannah.
In Season 3 Episode 1, Stephen heads to Max’s (Edmund Donovan) bar, presumably just to mess with Lucy after their break up. While there, he tries to get through to his sister Sadie (Alayna Hester), and when she doesn’t answer, he looks at his phone.
The camera shows his call history, which includes 11 unanswered calls to Sadie, as well as an answered call from someone named Dilan and a missed call from Hannah.
There are no mentions of Dilan or Hannah in the Hulu series or in Carola Lovering’s Tell Me Lies book, meaning it could just be a friend and random hookup, but it’s still piqued the interest of fans.
Taking to TikTok, one wrote, “As someone who notices every little detail, did anyone else catch Stephan’s recent call history? Who is Dilan and Hannah?!” Another replied, “I did! Put it in the ‘will be important later’ box, for sure.”
For now, all we can do is speculate and hope that Season 3 provides us with the answers. Episode 4 drops on Hulu on January 20.
