Yes, everyone’s favorite bounty hunting duo are back in The Mandalorian & Grogu, but there’s another intimidating character making his live action debut in the new Star Wars movie: Embo. Not sure who that is? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
Disney and Lucasfilm have kept the plot of the new film under wraps for quite some time, and fans were confused that the Super Bowl trailer was a reference to old beer adverts instead of a full look at the film — which arrives in theaters on May 22.
Thankfully, a week later, Disney released a full trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu which gives Star Wars fans a better idea of what to expect from the franchise’s first movie in theaters since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. The footage shows off the titular duo hunting down Imperial warlords for the Rebel Alliance while crossing paths with the Hutt clan, and there’s even a Martin Scorsese cameo!
But a brief moment introduces a mysterious character called Embo; he’s the reptillian-looking alien wearing a large hat while walking in the rain. You’d be forgiven for not recognizing his name, he’s not exactly as famous as other beloved characters that have shown up recently like Boba Fett or Ahsoka.
Who is Embo in Star Wars? The bounty hunter has only appeared in animation
Embo is a Kyuzo bounty hunter who first appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 2. He’s known for wearing a large metal-brimmed hat that can be utilised as a weapon, as well as using a bowcaster rifle (similar to the one Chewbacca uses). He was also voiced by Dave Filoni throughout the series, although it’s not clear whether he will reprise the role in the film.
Embo has always been a morally ambiguous character, but has often worked on the right side of things. In his first appearance he was part of the bounty hunter squad who worked with Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka Tano to protect a farmer from pirate Hondo Ohnaka.
He later appeared in a Season 4 arc when Obi-Wan infiltrated a bounty hunter competition run by Count Dooku, and again in Season 6 when he’s hired to take down Padme Amidala and Rush Clovis.
Essentially, Embo is a side character that fans quite liked, but no one really expected to see him pop up in live action because he had a fairly minor role in The Clone Wars. But since Filoni had a major hand in creating The Mandalorian franchise with Jon Favreau, it’s not too surprising that another of his characters has been brought into the new movie.
For now, it’s not clear how big Embo’s role in The Mandalorian & Grogu is, but early rumors suggested that he’s one of the major antagonists in the film.
