The first teaser trailer for the upcoming A24 horror movie Backrooms has arrived, and in the spirit of Kane Parsons’ short films, it looks set to be the scariest release of 2026.
For the uninitiated, the Backrooms began as a viral creepypasta posted anonymously on 4chan in 2019, describing a supposedly endless maze of yellowed office rooms entered by “noclipping” out of reality.
The concept quickly spread, spawning collaborative lore about numbered “levels,” entities, and survival rules. But it wasn’t until Parsons, aka Kane Pixels, uploaded his eerie found-footage style shorts in 2022 that it really took off.
Created using Blender, the teenage filmmaker perfectly captured what made the Backrooms terrifying with its analog horror aesthetic while creating a unique story. His videos have amassed millions of views, with fans calling on Hollywood to give it a series or movie order.
Kane Parsons’ A24 horror movie Backrooms drops first trailer
A24 answered the call, confirming last June that it had given the greenlight to a Backrooms horror movie directed by Parsons himself. After teasing us with a poster of the iconic blank, yellow wall, the first teaser trailer has arrived and, well, it’s eerie as hell:
What’s great is that the teaser does what it’s supposed to do: creates a feeling rather than giving anything away. The camera takes us down a series of levels before landing at the Backrooms, and though it’s ditched the VHS aesthetic, it’s instantly recognizable.
The clip has sparked plenty of excitement, with one fan writing, “The sound of those flickering lights. Goosebumps.” Another said, “So glad A24 is behind this,” while a third added, “20 years old and already directing his first feature with A24? MAJOR props to Kane!”
A fourth chimed in, “I love how the camera shifts down below each room with it getting darker and darker eventually entering into the Main Backrooms level. I am so stoked to see this.”
Although full plot details are still under wraps, the official logline confirms the film will follow a therapist whose patient vanishes into a dimension beyond reality, forcing her to enter it herself in a bid to bring him back.
That premise suggests a more character-driven angle while expanding on Parsons’ established A-Sync storyline. What’s great is that Parsons will remain in the director’s chair, and we know we can trust him to deliver something great.
Combined with A24’s track record for some of the best horrors of all time – Hereditary, Bring Her Back, Men, to name a few – and Backrooms is shaping up to be the most unsettling horror release of 2026.
The cast is another reason to be hyped, with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mark Duplass, Renate Reinsve, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia all joining in currently undisclosed roles.
