A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has transformed the Game of Thrones universe over the last six weeks, but there’s no Episode 7 this Sunday for a very good reason.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been a resounding success for HBO and showrunner Ira Parker, telling a simple story about a knight and his squire through bite-sized and entirely dragon-free episodes.
Season 1 is an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s first Dunk & Egg novella, introducing Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire, sending them to the Ashford tourney, then embroiling Dunk in a Trial of Seven.
Episode 6 dealt with the fallout from that battle, and here’s why the story doesn’t continue via Episode 7 this Sunday…
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms concluded with Episode 6
Episode 6 was the final instalment in Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, meaning there’s no Episode 7.
Controversy has surrounded the AKotSK episode/season length since the start, with some fans wanting longer runtimes more akin to Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, and others believing that the six 30-minute instalments should have been condensed into a single movie.
Indeed, during a recent roundtable interview – as reported by CBR – showrunner Ira Parker revealed that: “It was probably George [R. R. Martin’s] preference to do a two-hour movie. But since HBO came to me with this, they were very amenable to any length or format that we wanted to use.”
And that format will continue, with Parker confirming to Variety that Season 2 will again consist of six episodes.
“It really was the perfect amount for us,” Parker explained. “Honestly, HBO was wonderful. They said anywhere between 30 minutes and 60 minutes is fine, which gives us a very large target to hit. We could let them be what they needed to be based on the source material.”
As for how Season 1 ended, Episode 6 saw Dunk and Egg reunited, and heading to Dorne for a new adventure, while a beautiful parting shot featured the ghost of Ser Arlan riding off in a different direction, meaning his mentorship of Ser Duncan was complete.
