Danny Boyle directed 28 Days Later and 28 Years Later, but he isn’t helming forthcoming sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, for one very good reason.
28 Years Later is a belated sequel to 28 Days Later, with Alex Garland again on screenwriting duty, and Danny Boyle returning to direct.
But it’s also the start of a fresh horror trilogy, with the duo collaborating on this first film, but Boyle taking a back seat for sequel The Bone Temple.
Instead, Candyman and The Marvels director Nia DaCosta is overseeing the follow-up, which hits cinemas in just seven months. Though these’s a good reason for the substitution.
Why Nia DaCosta is directing 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
When discussing partnering with Sony on this new trilogy, Boyle told The Hollywood Reporter: “We wanted to make it in a remote area of England called Northumbria, and that was going to be expensive.
“We were looking for a partner who understood that, who was also prepared to invest in the second film, which was written. For logistical and financial reasons, it was insane not to do them back-to-back.”
Boyle continued: “That made it impossible for me to direct the second one, because I had to get the first one ready to be released. So we got Nia DaCosta to direct the second one. She’s done a great job of it.”
As for the final film in the trilogy, the idea is for Danny to get back in the director’s chair, but during that same interview, Boyle revealed: “We’re still trying to get the money for the third.”
