Malcolm in the Middle is returning for a sequel series that catches up with the characters in the present day, but one actor will be missing, for a very good reason.
Malcolm in the Middle launched on the Fox network in January of 2000, and ran for 151 episodes over seven successful seasons.
The sitcom starred Frankie Muniz as the title character, and revolved around the character’s strained relationship with his dysfunctional family.
A four-episode revival – titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair – is heading to Disney+ in 2026, but there will be one star notably absent…
Dewey actor Erik Per Sullivan won’t be in Malcolm in the Middle revival
Frankie Munoz posted a photo with the actors who play his older brothers in Malcolm in the Middle: Justin Berfield and Christopher Masterson. But younger brother Dewey – who was played by Erik Per Sullivan – wasn’t in the picture.
That’s because Sullivan isn’t participating in the reboot, due to his attending university.
Speaking on the Fly on the Wall podcast, Bryan Cranston – who plays Malcolm’s dad Hal in the series – revealed: “I talked to Erik and I said, ‘Hey, we got the show! It’s going to come back.’ He goes, ‘Oh, that’s fantastic!’ And I go, ‘Yeah, so we’re looking forward to having you back.’ He goes, ‘Oh, no, no, I don’t want to do it. But it’s fantastic.’
“He’s actually going to Harvard. He’s really, really smart, and he’s getting his master’s at Harvard right now. He said, ‘Oh God, no, I haven’t acted since I was nine or something. So I’m not into it.'”
But the character of Dewey will still be in the show, with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark assuming the role. While another character is also being switched up, as while James and Lukas Rodriguez played youngest brother Jamie in the series, that part will now be taken by Anthony Timpano.
