Task has been one of the most acclaimed new TV shows of 2025, but there’s a good reason why you won’t be watching Episode 8 this coming Sunday.

Task is the brainchild of Mare of Easttown creator Brad Inglesby, and tells the story of an FBI Task Force trying to take down a gang of thieves stealing from drug-dealing bikers.

Mark Ruffalo plays the head of that team, while Tom Pelphrey is the lead thief, with the show putting them on a collision course that had violent and devastating consequences.

The audience for the show has steadily grown since it launched on HBO in early September, with Episode 6 watched by 32% more people than Episode 1. But don’t expect to be watching Episode 8 this Sunday. Warning: spoilers ahead!

Is there a Task Season 1 Episode 8?

No, there is no Episode 8 of Task Season 1, as Episode 7 was the action-packed series finale.

That’s not to say we’ve seen the last of Ruffalo’s Tom Brandis, as the creator of Task has been speculating about a second season.

Brad Ingelsby told Esquire: “If people respond to Task and keep responding to Task, I’d love to tell more stories about this place, because I love writing about this place. I do feel like I have more stories to tell.”

Ruffalo has also intimated in interviews that he’d be up for continuing the story, meaning the ball is now very much in HBO’s court.

What happened in the Season 7 finale?

Following the Episode 6 bloodbath – when the Dark Hearts and task force collided – Episode 7 was mainly concerned with the fallout from that skirmish, and Lizzie’s death due Grasso’s betrayal.

Perry and Jayson manage to escape, and Perry is ordered to kill Jayson to save his own skin, but can’t go through with it. More fool him, as Jayson then stabs him to death in the creek, saying: “I know what you did.”

Grasso tells his sister what he’s been up to, and that he’s planning to come clean to his bosses, but before he can do that, gets shot by the Deark Hearts. While bleeding out, Grasso drives to Maeve’s house, and warns her that she’s next.

While she’s endeavouring to leave, Jayson and a mate arrive looking for the money, followed by Tom and Aleah, and a struggle ensues. Aleah takes out that mate, while Jayson holds Maeve hostage, and Grasso gets his redemption by shooting Jayson dead.

Grasso then bleeds out, while Tom ensures Maeve gets the missing money, so she can start a new life with Robbie’s kids. The story then turns to Brandis’s own complicated situation.

While appearing in court at Ethan’s sentencing hearing, Tom reads out his family’s statement, during which he outlines the tragic circumstances that led to his adopted son killing his wife. He then tells Ethan that he loves him and forgives him.

“I’m not here today to tell the court when my son should be released, that’s not up to me,” he says. “I’m here today to let you know, Ethan, that when that day comes, I’ll be ready. Come straight home. I’ll be there waiting for you.”

At the end of the episode, we see young Sam being adopted by a new family, while Tom readies a bedroom in his house, presumably in advance of Ethan’s arrival home.
