The last time Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk was onscreen, he was standing next to son Skaar, which begs the question: will his super-strong boy be in Spider-Man: Brand New Day?
The cast of Spider-Man: Brand New Day is stacked with cool characters for Peter Parker to spar with, including Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, Michael Mando’s Scorpion, and if rumors are to be believed, Charlie Cox’s Daredevil.
Mark Ruffalo also just closed a deal to reprise his Hulk in Spider-Man 4, which is currently shooting very publicly on the streets of Glasgow.
The last time we saw his Green Goliath, the big guy had family in tow, so what does that mean for Brand New Day? Here’s what we know…
Will Skaar be in Spider-Man: Brand New Day?
Having been introduced during Hulk’s last appearance, it’s likely Skaar will somehow factor into Spider-Man 4, if not via an onscreen appearance, then through mention of his whereabouts.
Brand New Day is Spider-Man’s story, so Hulk’s lad is unlikely to play a major role in proceedings, but it would be just plain weird for him to be ignored, while at the same time making Bruce Banner seem like a deadbeat dad.
That said, Marvel has been known to introduce characters before quickly forgetting them, from Clea in Doctor Strange 2 and Hercules in Thor 3, to the double whammy of Eros and Pip the Troll in Eternals.
Who is Skaar?
Created by Greg Park and John Romita Jr, and introduced in ‘What If? Planet Hulk #1’ in December 2007, Skaar is the son of Hulk and Caiera the Oldstrong, with the character conceived when the former was stranded on Sakaar.
His screen debut came out of nowhere during Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. During the final episode – titled ‘Whose Show Is This?’ – there’s a family barbecue, at which Hulk appears alongside his hitherto unmentioned boy.
The MCU Hulk was also stranded on Sakaar – as covered in the events of Thor: Ragnarok – so it’s likely that’s when and where this TV version was conceived.
But that’s all we know about the boy with the bad bowl haircut, as well as the last time he was seen in the Marcel Cinematic Universe.
A Skaar cameo could set up World War Hulk
World War Hulk is a beloved comic book storyline in which an angrier and more powerful Hulk than ever turns Manhattan into a giant gladiatorial arena, and fights the likes of the X-Men, The Avengers, and the Fantastic Four.
As we wrote in our World War Hulk explainer, “Skaar’s past is unavoidably tied to the events of Planet Hulk and World War Hulk, so the MCU must be planning some sort of adaptation, even if it’s a reimagining of it.”
The fans want it, with one writing: “I feel like he was introduced as some sort of World War Hulk setup… if the rumors of Hulk going savage again in Brand New Day are true, then it still is possible.”
Another predicted: “Skaar gonna die to unleash the Hulk we’ve all been waiting for,” with another concurring: “I hope he’s used as a plot device so when he dies it makes Hulk go berserk and split from Banner again.”
Mark Ruffalo is game for WWH action, stating in a 2022 interview with Entertainment Weekly: “The cool thing about this world is that it could just be anything. Five years from now it could totally morph into anything, whatever’s pertinent at the time.
“I almost see him going back to Berserker Hulk or World War Hulk. It could go anywhere. That’s the exciting part – I’ve played five different versions from beginning to now, and that’s kept it interesting for me and I hope interesting for other people.”
But if Skaar does return, the people want him to sort what’s on his head. “Why the F*CK is his hair like that?” wrote one, while another stated, “I hope they fix his f*cking hairline.”
