Black Phone 2 has been a hit in cinemas this past weekend, and author Joe Hill and star Ethan Hawke are already pitching ideas for a potential sequel.

The first Black Phone movie introduced the world to Ethan Hawke’s terrifying ‘Grabber,’ and quickly became a box office smash, grossing more than $160 million worldwide.

The sequel debuted at Fantastic Fest, where we wrote in out Black Phone 2 review that it “it leans into what worked in the first film, while also taking the story in interesting and unexpected directions.”

Black Phone 2 hit screens over the weekend, and the horror movie launched with a $42 million global gross, meaning talk is already turning to a potential threequel…

Joe Hill says Black Phone 3 should have “dual stars”

Horror author Joe Hill wrote the original story on which the first movie was based, then came up with the idea that co-writer C. Robert Cargill and writer-director Scott Derrickson turned into Black Phone 2. And he’s already working up ideas for Part 3.

“One of the things which is fun about Black Phone is the first story is about Finney in danger and his sister trying to save him,” Hill tells Variety. “He’s the lead, and she’s the key second character. But in this film, there’s a flip where Gwen is the lead character and her brother is trying to save her.

“To me, the logical thing is if there is a third film, they are dual stars where they’re sitting trying to save each other. Maybe there’s a way to do that, maybe there isn’t… we’ll have to see.”

Much will depends on what staying power Black Phone 2 has in cinemas, with Hill saying before he film’s release: “We’ll see if people want more. At the time we’re doing this interview, I have seen some numbers on the Thursday previews and they look pretty good.

“I’m pretty hopeful for where the film is going to land financially. But people vote with their dollars. If people want Black Phone 3, they’ll let us know by banging down the doors to go see Black Phone 2.”

Ethan Hawke wants to follow the Grabber to hell

Ethan Hawke has been pitching his own Black Phone 3 idea, telling Entertainment Weekly: “Genre’s a great place to play, and every genre is kind of a sequel, in a way, because you’re building off such preexisting expectations. I would like to go to hell with the Grabber. That’s what I’d like to do.

“I’d like to get to know him. That would be my dream for the third one, to let it be a character piece about what made him, who he is now, and how he’s haunting other people’s dreams.”

As for the writer and director, they both say it’s all about the core idea being strong enough, with Scott Derrickson revealing to Polygon: “I understand that’s the business of the studios, trying to create film franchises. And I certainly respect film franchises as a horror fan.

“But as a filmmaker, I have to go one film at a time, and any film that I work on, I have to feel like this might be the last one I get to do. So it had to be complete. We haven’t had one conversation about a Black Phone 3, and I don’t know that we will.”

Cargil added: “Would we love to get the band back together? Absolutely. Would I love to explore those characters some more? I thought about it. But it all comes down to: ‘Is there a good enough idea to justify us putting a year of our life into making that?’

“When you commit to a movie, that becomes part of your life for at least a year. So it’s really got to be something really great and inspiring for us to want to make a third one.”
