Kpop Demon Hunters is nothing short of a global phenomenon, with the genre-bending movie breaking a Netflix original record. Now, talks are turning to whether there will be a sequel, and the signs are looking good.
From 28 Years Later to Ballerina, this month is packed full of exciting new films to see at the cinema. But there are just as many big titles coming to streaming services, the buzziest being Kpop Demon Hunters.
The movie follows a girl group who moonlight as demon slayers, blending animated action, fantasy, and, of course, some absolute bops. The proof is in the pudding: it’s received a respective 94% and 93% from critics and viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest combined score for a Netflix original.
With the film out now and hitting first spot on the charts, you might be wondering whether there will be a Kpop Demon Hunters 2. The creators certainly have some ideas in store.
Will there be a Kpop Demon Hunters 2?
Although Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are yet to give a sequel the greenlight, it’s looking good. Not only is the film doing well from a ratings point of view, but the creators would love to continue the franchise – and they already have plans.
When asked if there are ideas for a follow-up, co-director Maggie Kang told ScreenRant: “Always. There are always side stories, and there are things we’ve thought of while making this one.”
“There are a lot of questions that are answered, but not fully. I think there are a lot of pockets that we can explore,” Kang added, elaborating on the unanswered questions in a separate interview.
“I think there’s questions that are a tiny bit answered in the movie, like Rumi’s origins. Who were her parents, her relationship with Celine, Celine’s relationship with Rumi’s mom, there are a lot of things that we had to omit because we were very focused on meeting time with the movie,” she said.
“But also, there’s a lot of things even with the origin stories of the girls, like, how did they become hunters? How were they chosen? We have a whole backstory for all of them and we did board a lot of those scenes.
“But ultimately, when we cut them [into the edit], the movie just kind of rejected it. It wasn’t that the stories are bad, but this movie is the story of Rumi and her coming to the acceptance of her flaws, so it didn’t really belong. So, there are stories that can be made.”
In short, it seems it’s a case of when rather than if – Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation just need to say the word. In the meantime, be sure to check out the new movie for yourself.
