Task has been a huge hit for HBO, and with the acclaimed crime drama drawing to a close this weekend, talk is inevitably turning to whether or not the story will continue into Season 2.

Task stars Mark Ruffalo as an FBI agent investigating a series of home invasions aimed at a motorcycle drug gang.

The series premiered on September 7, 2025, and its audience has steadily grown since, with Episode 6 watched by 32% more viewers than that debut instalment, bringing in more than four million US viewers across HBO’s various platforms.

Episode 7 hits screens on Sunday, and while that’s the end of the season, it won’t be the end of the series, if showrunner Brad Ingelsby gets his way.

When asked about the potential future of Task, Ingelsby told Esquire: “If people respond to Task and keep responding to Task, I’d love to tell more stories about this place, because I love writing about this place. I do feel like I have more stories to tell.”

As for why he wants to continue this journey, Inglesby added: “What I love about TV is just how many characters you get to explore. I really see myself as a character writer and not a great plot writer. And so what I love about TV is that you get to explore the Grassos, the Lizzies, the Aleahs. If I was to do a movie, unless I was Robert Altman, I just wouldn’t be able to tap into that many characters.”

So Ingelsby is up for the challenge, meaning the ball is now very much in HBO’s court.

Season 2 could be a Mare of Easttown crossover

As the finale hasn’t aired yet, we don’t know how Task Season 1 ends, but as Inglesby was responsible for another crime drama – Mare of Easttown – that played out in a nearby location and on HBO, there remains the possibility of a crossover.

“I think there were still more stories to be told about people in Delaware County,” Ingelsby told The Hollywood Reporter. “They exist in the same world, so it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Mare [played by Kate Winslet] walked into a Wawa that Tom (Ruffalo’s character) was in. I don’t have a story in mind that’s a crossover, but I love the idea of their worlds intersecting.”

Tom Pelphrey – who plays criminal Robbie Prendergrast in Task – also likes the idea, saying: “That would be amazing. I was a huge fan of Mare of Easttown. And obviously, I’m a big fan of Task. So, if there’s a version where those things crossover, I think that would make a lot of people very happy.”
