There’s no guarantee that Wonder Man will receive a Season 2 order, but should Marvel green-light Simon Williams’ further adventures, here’s what might happen…
New Disney+ series Wonder Man is a bizarre mix of superhero origin story, mismatched buddy comedy, and Hollywood satire.
We weren’t convinced about that unusual combination of genres, awarding the series 2/5, and writing in our Wonder Man review that it feels “less like a satisfying self-contained series, and more akin to an overlong and underwhelming pre-credits sequence.”
But the series concludes in open-ended fashion, so should Wonder Man’s story continue, here’s how the story might progress, plus some ideas that showrunner Andrew Guest is considering for Season 2.
How Wonder Man ending sets up Season 2
There’s a distinct lack of superhero thrills in Wonder Man, with Simon Williams barely acknowledging his abilities during the eight episodes.
Instead, the show is more focussed on his acting career, and burgeoning friendship with Trevor Slattery, who unbeknownst to him, has been hanging with Simon to gather information for Agent P. Cleary at the Department of Damage Control.
Slattery ends up changing his mind about that deal and siding with Simon, then reviving his Mandarin persona and turning himself in, which results in Trevor being incarcerated at a secret DODC prison in Yuca Valley.
Which is when Williams finally springs into action, infiltrating said prison by shadowing a guard, channelling his ionic powers to free Trevor, and flying him out through the roof.
The series ends there, suggesting that Season 2 will revolve around the DODC’s efforts to track down Simon and Trevor, and either control or neutralise the threat that Wonder Man’s powers pose.
Wonder Man vs Door Man
Wonder Man also featured a decidedly odd episode that focused on a bouncer becoming a superhero called Door Man, whose story ends with Josh Gad entering his stomach, and disappearing somewhere inside.
When we spoke to showrunner Andrew Guest, he suggested that a future season would reveal the star’s fate.
“Josh Gad is alive and Inside Door Man currently,” he said of the actor playing himself. “If we get a Season 2, my promise is to get Josh Gad out of Door Man, and back into the world.
“It has occurred to me that maybe Josh Gadd would have Door Man powers, after having been inside him for so long. Maybe Josh Gadd becomes the new Door Man!”
Guest added that he’d like to see Simon Williams team up with Kate Bishop in a future adventure.
“One of the things that has occurred to me having worked on Hawkeye and worked with Haile [Steinfeld] is that she and Simon would have an interesting relationship. Because she’s got no superpowers, but is an incredibly heroic person, and incredibly selfless. And he’s got all this power, and doesn’t give a crap about it, or want to use it.
“One day, maybe, those two will meet.”
