Adria Arjona is one of the top picks among fans to play the DCU’s Wonder Woman, and she already has a relationship with James Gunn thanks to a brutal, underrated 2017 movie.

The DCEU is officially dead. That means (pending any multiversal cameos down the line) Gal Gadot is out as Wonder Woman, and Gunn and Peter Safran are looking for someone new to play the Princess of Themyscira.

Arjona, best known for her roles in Andor and Hit Man, has emerged as a firm fan favorite to take on the role. It’s even been speculated that she’s already been cast after people noticed Gunn following her on Instagram.

Gunn has since explained that he’s known her for years, and as Arjona has already said, he gave her her first role in a studio movie.

Adria Arjona starred in James Gunn’s The Belko Experiment

The Belko Experiment, written by Gunn and directed by Greg McLean, is a nasty, gruesome action-horror movie that’s basically a combination of Office Space and Battle Royale.

It revolves around the employees of Belko Industries, who are forced to start killing each other to save themselves – and bloody chaos ensues. Arjona plays Leandra, the main love interest of John Gallagher Jr’s Mike, and it also stars Tony Goldwyn, John C. McGinley, and Sean Gunn.

It may not have the most encouraging score on Rotten Tomatoes (55% from critics, 40% from audiences), but take it from me: at under 90 minutes (89, to be exact), this is a tight, exhilarating feel-bad thriller with some gnarly kills. Remember, Gunn started in the world of Troma, and this feels like a callback to his edgier days.

In an interview with CinemaBlend, Arjona was asked about the prospect of her playing Wonder Woman in Gunn’s DCU.

“He gave me my first movie ever… my first studio movie. So I owe him a lot. I love James Gunn,” she said, and when the interviewer pressed her on Wonder Woman, she crossed her fingers and said, “I don’t know.”

Speaking to Extra, Gunn also clarified: “I follow Adria on Instagram, but everybody came out [and thought], ‘He just followed her, that means she’s Wonder Woman.'”

However, he added: “She’d be a great Wonder Woman, by the way. She was in a movie that I made seven years ago. We’ve been friends and have known each other since that time. I followed her then, I didn’t just follow her.”

In another interview with EW, Gunn confirmed the Wonder Woman movie is being written “right now”, but nobody has officially been cast.
