Ethel Caterham, the world’s oldest person, has celebrated her 116th birthday in Surrey, England.
Caterham was born on August 21, 1909, during the reign of King Edward VII, making her the last surviving subject of the Edwardian era.
She officially became the world’s oldest verified living person in April 2025 following the death of Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, who was 116. Caterham marked her latest milestone on August 21, 2025, with a private family gathering at her care home in Lightwater.
Her longevity has drawn recognition across the UK, with King Charles III sending her a birthday card for her 115th birthday in 2024.
Oldest living person
Ethel Caterham’s life spans across three centuries and multiple royal reigns, from Edward VII to Charles III. She is now considered the oldest known living human worldwide, verified by global longevity researchers.
A statement given to the BBC from Ethel’s care home gave thanks for the birthday wishes.
“Ethel and her family are so grateful for all of the kind messages and interest shown to her as she celebrates her 116th birthday this year,” they said.
“Ethel will spend the day quietly with her family so that she can enjoy it at her own pace. Thank you again for your kind wishes on this special day.”
