Twitch star Felix ‘xQc’ Lengyel came to the defence of VTuber concerts, saying that they’re “better” than other musicians as he believes they actually sing and don’t lip-sync.
As well as streaming games, many of the top VTubers have gotten into music too, creating original songs and performing for fans. This has been the case with Ironmouse, Nana Asteria, and Mori Calliope, to name but a few.
A select few have taken their musical talents outside of their streams as well, performing for fans at packed-out concerts. These spectacles regularly wow fans, especially on the production side of things, because of how the VTubers manage to bring their animated selves to life for a real-life crowd.
There are, of course, plenty of critics who have mocked fans for attending the shows, as well as others who’ve claimed that the performance is just a recording. However, xQc has jumped to the defence of VTuber performances.
xQc compares live VTuber concerts to esports
After watching a clip of Hoshimachi Suisei’s performance at K-Arena in Yokohama, the Canadian streamer claimed some VTubers have “better” concerts than bands and other musicians, simply because of the live performance.
“If people enjoy it and they want to do what they do, go ahead. It’s not anymore invalid or valid than any other concert, if you think about it,” xQc said. “Any other concert is the same thing, it’s just lip-sync, faking, whatever the f*ck.
“If I were to argue, this is actually more of a performance than most real concerts. They’re having fun with it.”
The former Overwatch star said, “I don’t personally like it” because of the “disco sounds” in the music. “I can’t get behind it,” he added. “It’s just not for me.”
xQc added that he does “like” some of Hatsune Miku’s music, pointing out the differences for fans.
He also compared the performances to esports events. “You guys make fun of this, but then you go and celebrate esports,” he continued. “You go and watch a bunch of gamers. It’s all characters, its all heroes, if anything, it’s worse than VTubers because there’s nobody behind it.”
