The Black Phone fans don’t have to wait for the sequel to get more from its chilling universe. An official spin-off short is already streaming, and it connects directly to the first film.
The Black Phone 2 is set to hit theaters on October 17, with Ethan Hawke returning as The Grabber. But ahead of its release, director Scott Derrickson has already expanded the story world through a short film titled ‘Dreamkill.’
The segment was part of the 2023 found footage horror anthology V/H/S/85.
Black Phone 2 director made a spin-off film
Dreamkill follows a detective, played by Freddy Rodriguez, who receives disturbing VHS tapes showing brutal murders before they actually happen. When those murders come true, the investigation leads to Gunther Blake (Diethel Derrickson), a young boy who reveals the footage comes from his psychic dreams.
Gunther is revealed to be Gwen’s cousin – yes, that Gwen, linking the short directly to The Black Phone and hinting at shared supernatural abilities in the family. As you may recall, Gwen had dreams of her brother, Finney, being kidnapped by The Grabber during the first movie.
Derrickson described the tie-in as “a little Easter egg” for fans.
Dreamkill is included in V/H/S/85 and can be streamed right now on Shudder. For anyone excited about The Black Phone 2, this short is the perfect prequel and a must-watch for horror fans.
