19-year-old pilot Ethan Guo has had all charges against him dropped after he landed in Chilean territory in Antarctica.

Back in June, Ethan Guo found himself in hot water after an unauthorized landing in Chilean Antarctic territory. The 19-year-old was detained by Chilean officials at Teniente Marsh Airfield following landing there.

Guo, who has been documenting his attempt to become the first pilot to visit all seven continents while flying solo in a light aircraft, had reportedly told Chilean air traffic control that he would take off from Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Airport in Punta Arenas for a flight over the city.

His lawyer claimed that “complications” had forced him to make the landing on King George Island, which is just off the Atlantic coast. However, Guo had been held for almost two months.

As per the BBC, the 19-year-old has since had all charges against him dropped, but will have to pay $30,000 to a children’s cancer foundation. Guo is also prohibited from entering any Chilean territory for the next three years.

Despite reportedly having permission to return to Chile, the social media star has been stuck in Antarctica for the last six weeks due to the weather.

“I remain in Antarctica awaiting approval for my departure flight,” he told the Associated Press after the charges were dropped. “I sincerely hope they give it to me soon so that I and my plane can continue with my original mission.”

As noted, the 19-year-old has been flying solo in a bid to raise money for St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in their fight against cancer.

Before his detainment, Guo had regularly posted videos to TikTok and Instagram recapping parts of his trip. Those came to a stop on June 23, but should make a return once his journey resumes.
