Zack Snyder has sat down for an in-depth interview where he’s not only addressed whether the Snyderverse could continue, but also told critics of his fandom to “go f**k yourself.”

The DCEU director appeared on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast to mark the 10-year anniversary of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, reflecting on the divisive DC movie and the wider legacy of his superhero films.

The conversation comes as DC Studios enters a new era under James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Gunn’s Superman ushering in a rebooted DCU and officially closing the chapter on the previous interconnected universe.

While Snyder praised the new direction, he did not hold back when discussing the reputation of the Snyderverse fandom, which has long been accused of being “toxic” in some corners of the internet.

During the interview, Snyder addressed the claims that the Snyderverse fanbase became overly aggressive during the campaign to release his cut of Justice League.

The #ReleasetheSnyderCut movement, which began after Snyder exited the 2017 movie and a reworked theatrical version was released, eventually resulted in 2021’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League debuting on HBO Max following years of online campaigning.

Referencing that period, Snyder pointed out that the fan movement was not solely about demanding a director’s cut. It also raised $500,000 for American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in honor of his daughter Autumn, who died in 2017.

Talking about the release of The Snyder Cut, he said, “I think the fans should never forget that they did that,” before adding, “We raised a ton of money for suicide prevention and they really did a lot of good.

“I think that they catch a lot of flack for being ‘toxic’ or whatever, but they literally saved human lives. So, you can go f**k yourself if that’s you think.”

Could the Snyderverse return?

Snyder also addressed the long-running question of whether his planned Justice League sequels could ever materialize in some form.

“I would never say that there’s no way,” he commented, referencing the campaign for his cut of the DC film. Snyder noted that there were “dark times” when he believed his version would “never exist,” yet it ultimately did.

At the same time, Snyder did not suggest that a continuation is going ahead. He described his DC arc as a “mythological universe” that had a defined ending, adding that it was designed to “bloom” and then conclude rather than run indefinitely.

The director also made clear that he harbors no ill will towards the current leadership of the DCU, saying James Gunn has been “very cool,” and describing Gunn’s Superman as “amazing… I wish them all the best.”

“It’s just not the same thing,” Snyder said of the rebooted DCU, saying his films are a separate creative entity rather than something in direct competition with Gunn’s plans.
