As the internet still reels from viral images of “Last of Us” rabbits with tentacle-like growths, a new nightmare has hit backyards across North America: zombie squirrels.

Grotesque gray squirrels covered in pus-filled, wart-like tumors have been photographed in states like Maine and across parts of Canada, reports the Daily Mail.

Social media users on Reddit and X have shared images showing squirrels with oozing sores and hairless patches across their heads and limbs.

While reports of afflicted squirrels date back to mid-2023, sightings have surged again this summer.

Viral disease behind the grotesque sightings

Experts say the culprit is likely squirrel fibromatosis, a viral skin disease caused by leporipoxvirus. The condition creates wart-like growths that can burst and ooze fluid, giving squirrels their terrifying “zombie” appearance.

Although most cases heal naturally, the disease can sometimes affect internal organs and prove fatal.

Wildlife officials stress the virus cannot spread to humans or pets. However, they warn bird feeders may be fueling outbreaks by bringing squirrels into close contact.

Shevenell Webb of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife cautioned against intervening: “I would not recommend trying to capture a squirrel that has the virus. It is naturally occurring and will run its course in time.”
